Five Minute Friday: Catch

Please be sure to visit the Gypsy Mama to play along!

I tried to catch a butterfly that day. Not with my hands, but with my Nikon. It was flitting around from flower to fence post and was just so beautiful that I had to have it. I wasn't paying attention. I didn't catch that butterfly, but in a way it caught me. I was looking up at it, thinking how cool it would be to finally capture a Monarch, instead of looking down. My foot caught in a hole left behind where a tree must have been years before we moved here. The rest of my body didn't get the message that my foot had stopped moving and down I went. It hurt; it hurt really bad. My camera lens was broken, the camera itself was jammed, and I was sure my leg and arm were broken. I hobbled inside the house crying my eyes out over my Nikki. Hang the arm and leg! When could I get a new camera?

I couldn't bear the thought of not having one and right away. I had gotten the camera about three months before when we were caught up in the evacuation for Hurricane Rita and ended up staying in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As the wind caught a giant mass of people, moving them around for the second time in three weeks or so, I was happy and allergy-free and toolin' around Tulsa like I'd lived there all my life. I think I caught a tiny little glimpse of self-confidence then, a thousand miles away from home for the second time in a year, because I was able to get to the store and back to the hotel without getting lost in a city where I had never been before.

I'm still waiting to catch that butterfly.

  1. oh blast... well Butterflies are easy to lure.
Get yourself a butterfly bush, they come in many colors... plant it in your backyard...or someones... and by spring you will have more butterfly pictures then you know what to do with...
Butterfly bushes are hardy and live forever.

  2. So sorry about the leg and arm...and yes the camera too...but you are more important. Now as to butterflies...was that why I posted the ones I did this last week, for you? While you rest up, please enjoy the ones I was able to get close too. Best wishes!

  3. I loved the narration, it was like listening to a good friend talk. I could have just kept reading and reading. :)

Could relate to those last sentences, I've often felt this way in some places.

  4. @aseedinspired.com

Thanks for your suggestion about the butterfly bush. Am I right in thinking that hummingbirds also like this bush? Does this need full sun? Our yard is loaded with huge oak trees with very wide canopies. Not much sun actually reaches the ground in our yard. If they like shade at all, I'm in. :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great day!

  5. @Jeannette

Hi Jeannette. :) Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Thankfully, this was just a recollection of something that happened to me back in 2005, so I'm fully recovered from that fall. I just don't think that I'll ever forget it. That was the first time I'd ever actually killed a camera.

By the way, I love your butterfly shots! I especially love the one with several of the Monarchs in view. They are such pretty butterflies. :)

Thanks again! Have a great day!

  6. @Cathy

Hi Cathy. Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind comments on my post. I am glad that you enjoyed it. :)

Are you good at getting lost, too? I even get lost on the maternity floor of the hospital where I've had many babies. haha That is why it surprised me that I didn't get lost in Tulsa. It was too weird. :)

Thanks again and have a wonderful day!
