Writer's Workshop: Death of Social Media, Birth of a Hobby

Mama’s Losin’ It

If Social Media died tomorrow, describe another hobby you might get into.

If social media (as in Facebook, MySpace, Twitter) died tomorrow, it would not negatively affect me. Facebook, in my opinion, is a time-sucking, home-wrecking, something-I'd-rather-do-without and am only there because other folks think that I should be. I much prefer e-mail. If e-mail died tomorrow, that would be a problem for me. If blogs died tomorrow, that would be upsetting, but it wouldn't stop the writing. I would pay more attention to my neglected in-the-flesh journal.

As for a hobby that I might get into...I can't think of any new hobbies. I would just spend more time learning more about the hobbies that I already have: genealogy, digital art, crocheting, knitting, reading, writing, beading, etc.

Please be sure to visit Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop to join in the fun!

  2. I agree in that my hobbies would continue and I do depend on email. However, I also love FB in that I stay connected to my friends and family living away, especially my college age kids! But i would continue writing and taking photos even if the blog world died.

Hi Jenny, thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one out here that feels this way. :)

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I hope that you have a great night!

Hi Shanda, thanks! FB is an easy enough way to update (and keep up with) a lot of family members at once. It has just caused more heartache than heart-happy for me. It is probably about the only way to keep up with some folks out there, though. :)

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting here. I hope that you have a great night!

  6. Yep, I hear ya! I like FB for keeping in touch with friends overseas, but I'd rather email or send old-fashioned snail mail. There's just something about writing with a real pen (one with a smooth rolling ink ball...or a reeeeally fine ballpoint, mmm) on real paper. And receiving anything in the mail that ISN'T a bill! Popped over from Mama Kat's link up =)

Hi Ange, and thank you, too!

Receiving anything in the mail that isn't a bill is great, but too much of a rarity these days, that's for sure.

Do you compose faster when you write by hand? Do you find it hard to go back and forth between typing and writing with a pen? My handwriting has gotten horrible after 15 years of being on the computer. :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great night!

  8. Definitely a wonderful rarity - my mum sends me a birthday card in the mail every year, and she lives just 5mins away! So sweet.

I definitely compose faster with a pen...I find my hand just takes over and I've suddenly written half a page before I know it. I have about 4 styles of handwriting, all of which have gotten progressively lazier since using computers every day. But I still love to write the old-fashioned way.

You have a great night - it's the middle of the day here in NZ, but it's freeeezing so I'm tempted to pull the curtains and PRETEND it's nighttime!

  9. If social media died tomorrow I would ask you to teach me knitting ;-) I'm really a Facebook/Twitter junkie and would not know what to do if it happens.

I think that it is sweet that your mum sends you a card in the mail even though she's right there. Very thoughtful. :)

I compose faster with a pen, too, but I can't always read it afterwards. haha

It has been way hot here. The highest I've seen so far has been 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Too bad we can't swap temps or at least stay at a happy medium, eh?

Thanks so much for responding. I appreciate it very much. Have a great day!

I would be happy to teach you all that I know about knitting, which in the grand scheme of things isn't much, but it would be fun trying. haha

I tweet my blogs and do some paid tweeting things, but overall, I don't really know how to make the most of Twitter. By the time I have it figured out, it will have changed on me. I'm glad that it works for you. :)

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I appreciate it. Have a great evening!

  12. I really want to learn to knit and crochet, maybe the death of social media wouldn't be a bad thing!!

Hi, Patty Ann. Thanks for visiting and commenting. :)

For me, learning to crochet was really easy. My aunt taught me how using a basic granny square pattern.

Knitting took me forever to get and I can still only do really basic things. But I can make basic baby booties and sweaters and that's what's important to me.

I think that both are lots of fun. :)

Those of you that are interested in learning to knit or crochet, there are videos on YouTube that might be helpful to you (I haven't watched these yet, but plan to!). Search for "knitting for beginners" and "crochet for beginners". I hope they help!

    Have a great night!
